There is something in the heart of every woman that she would meet a man that would fight for her, and most men, although they complain about 'chick flicks' want to be their woman's knight in shining armour. Yet we all overlook the fact that there is a love story that has been termed such for many generations, but still we either take it for granted or fail to recognize it as such until it is too late. That Love story is the story of the Love that God has for us. We have the Father, and the Son who so overflow with love for their wayward creation that they pay the price, and take the ultimate risk in order to bring their creation to them.
I have for the last week watched and read veraciously Pride and Prejudice and have been endevouring to work out why the story works so well that after nearly three hundred years from the authors publishing it it is still such a literary giant, ever popular to make into film. The answer that came to me was simple and profound - in that the best ropmances and novels will always to some degree or another mirror that which God has done for His church. For although I would not dare to say that any imperfect characters can truly put forward the character of GOd, they can imperfectly reflect it.
GOd who is all loving and all knowing has had His character lied about and maligned by His enemy. THe SOng of Solomon, although being a very human love story is also the story of God's love for His church. He comes and he woos us and for a time whether we are JEw or gentile, part of the nation or the the church, we will follow, and then the church or the Nation will fall aaway into apostasy andGod will again try to woo us, but we put our own ideas and expectations on what GOd is like and we reject His advances on false premises or what false reports that the evil one has sent us,, and God has to bring us back and like MR Darcy when Miss Benet has rejected him, GOd writes us His letter (the Scriptures) and HE asks us to read it, and do justice to what He asks of us, and slowly our oppinions of God c hance and we ccome back to Him for a time. THe greatest love story and the greateest love letter are the same book, for the Holy Scriptures truly are the story of GOd's love for you and His love for me, and despite our rejections time and again, God is still trying to woo you and to woo me.
