22-06-2010 James Chapter 1
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:43:59 pm »
All Commmentary in this is entirely my own!

Jas 1:1-27

(1)  James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

Here we see James introducing himself, and it is important to notice that James is not addressing gentile Christians but fellow Jewish believers – members of the Children of Israel.

(2)  My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

(3)  Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

(4)  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

How many of us truly can say that we rejoice in temptation? Do we not more turn around and complain at what we are going through rather than seeing the end result? Yet James says here we are to rejoice when temptations come our way- beware though brethren James is not saying to rejoice when we give into temptation, but rather to rejoice when temptation comes our way.

Mal 3:3

(3)  And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

When refining silver the refiner is next to the silver every step of the way, and as the fire heats up around the silver gradually the dross rises to surface  and the refiner skims it off the top, eventually nor more dross will rise to the surface and the silver is ready to create whatever thing the refiner chooses to make from the pure silver. At this stage the Silver is so pure a clean that the refiner can see his face reflected perfectly in the silver. So it is with God, even when we go through various temptations know that God is right there next to you, crying with you, comforting you and gently nudging you on to bigger and better things. As the dross and filth of this world and sin rises to the surface of our lives so God gently skims them off and nudges us to do better, and thereby giving us the victory over our sins and problems one step at a time, until eventually he can reflected in our lives the righteousness of Christ our Saviour.  At that point he is ready to make us into what we ought to be, as Sons and Daughters of the Most High. What Adam should have been….

Take notice there are two promises here also 1. We never go through the trials needlessly for they work patience in our lives

2. That we can become Perfect, and want nothing. Now there is some confusion in the ranks of English speaking Christians for the word want has two meanings (or maybe I should say two levels) 1. It can mean that something is necessary but not as great as a need or 2. It can mean that it is something we would like, not as strong as a desire but we it is nice to have.  I like the word want, for when I read that I shall not want, in Psalm 23:2 I find that God is concerned not just with things that are urgent and I cannot survive without, but also that he is concerned with my puny, wishy washy that would be nice wants.

Psalm 20:1-4 Goes even further than that and states:

Psa 20:1-4

(1)  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

(2)  Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

(3)  Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.

(4)  Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel.

So here we see that even our hearts desires God is concerned to grant us. Now these cover things that are termed luxuries as well as necessities. So what we see James saying in actual fact is that God will bless us over and above anything we can imagine. That we never need anything, but this come after a time of trial and a time of discipline to see if we will follow God or not.

(5)  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

(6)  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

(7)  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

(8)  A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

(9)  Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

(10)  But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

(11)  For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

(12)  Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

(13)  Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

(14)  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

In Proverbs Solomon tells us that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and we see here also James is telling us to ask for wisdom if we lack it. However James also brings why many of us do not receive what we ask for. Verse 6 and verse 8 talk about wavering and being double minded, that is we ask but do not believe that we will get it, so what we do is we vasilate and say things like if it be thy will, and if things don’t look like they’re going our way we throw tantrums or we say see I told you that prayer doesn’t work, or I told you I’m not lucky. Words have power, and too often we go to God and we say ok God if you can please do XYZ, or else we get on our knees and we say God I know you can do XYZ  please do it for me, and then we get up from our knees and we complain to those around us how bad our situation is and how nothing ever changes we pray and nothing happens, how God never seems to answer our prayers etc. and our words become self fulfilling prophecies because we are being double minded, we know (headknowledge) that God is good and that He can, but then we go around complaining and telling others that God won’t do what we’ve asked. James says that such a man is not even to think that he will receive anything from God. What we need to do is majorly shift our focus and fully surrender to God and trust that when God has promised to do something HE is faithful and just to fulfil his promises, but whatever we do we MUST NOT use our words to enforce our own defeat and lack of answers after God has promised that whatever we ask believing we already have.

The second half of these verse is beautiful, for James goes on to show us  the root cause of our temptations – our own lusts, yet also points out what the end result is – A crown of life, if we endure and not give in, and be drawn away. Read revelation 21,22 for a fuller idea of whats instore for those who endure to the end.

(15)  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

(16)  Do not err, my beloved brethren.

(17)  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

(18)  Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

(19)  Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

(20)  For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

(21)  Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Do you have your tongue under good regulation? Do you keep your body under regulation as Paul taught? For these things are a necessity to enduring temptation, which is why James here brings out that we are to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. Does your temper flare easily? Give it to God for he can calm you down, do you speak too quickly? This advice my mother gave me as I was growing up is a good jusge of whether we should say something: Is it true? Is it nice? Is it necessary? In order to know if you should say something atleast being true and necessary must be fulfilled although you really should be nice in how you say it as well, so if there’s a nicer way to say something that is necessary use it. For remember that a Soft answer turneth away wrath.

(22)  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

(23)  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

(24)  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

(25)  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

(26)  If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

(27)  Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

I will do a commentary on this part later on as part of commentary on some of chapter two for otherwise I shall end up repeating myself :D

Good points!  In fact rather a lot to take in!

During the "double-mindedness" part I was thinking how very deep doubt runs, at least in me.  In my head I do trust and believe the Lord.  Some of the "temptations" He allows to come into my life I know are in order for me to come to trust Him experientially.  As He has helped me through those times I have seen exactly how I can count them all joy!!  In the beginning I didn't know how to do that.  But on the other side of them I just see that they are actually opportunities to grow into really knowing Him better...and finding out for sure that I CAN INDEED trust everything about Him!!

PRAISE THE LORD!

I also ran across this commentary on James 1:

Conclusion

In this first chapter of the biblical text we have found the thrust of James's entire letter: calling upon Christians to live with moral urgency, serious holiness and unconditional obedience to the word of God. By putting the two halves of the chapter together we also establish the context for the moral earnestness of the entire letter: complete confidence in and reliance upon the grace of God. James is so earnest for moral purity in 1:19-27 because of the theology he has taught in 1:1-18. It is the thorough purity of God (never tempted, never tempting, never changing) that calls us to holiness; it is the generous giving of God (giving wisdom without finding fault, giving the crown of life, giving every good and perfect gift, giving us birth) that moves us to holiness. Furthermore, going back to the very beginning of James's message, this pursuit of holiness is not an oppressive burden but a task of joy, because of the great worth of the goal that God's grace has made possible. God has called Christians to become mature and complete, as firstfruits of all he created. This is so high a calling and so valuable an attainment that we may consider even trials along the way pure joy!

I love all the books of the bible,  James 1  brings insight that when gleamed helps us to understand the trials and temptations we fall into have been designed for us personally to be tested by and brought through, that we count it joy because  we should realize our outcome will be more Christ-like.   lol

We should not complain if one brother has more than another, but take pride in our high position if our circumstances  is a humbling one.

It is better to be poor and have less chance of sin overwhelming you than it is to be rich because it is a "low position"..and one should take pride in his low position because  he will pass away like a flower if he does not share his blessing with others...Jame 1:9

this is very scary.  I don't won't to have lots of money and not share it with those who have less,  we have all fallen short of the glory of God in my opinion.  May the Lord help us all.   We are selfish, sinful and in need of having salve put on our eyes.

in Christ's love
the father said he was sending the tribulation through the seed of Ishmael  and they are camped around us now.  Trust the Lord in the times of trouble that is near to all of us.   The Lord is coming.

Amen Vickie!

You made me think too, while reading your reply...that our perspective can be SO wrong!  The "low position" of the rich...is actually true!  Because they have much for this world, they actually can't trust the Lord as much as one who is "poor"!!

Hello precious sister in Christ....my heart is just filled with joy when I speak with you.

Money is the root of all evil, and when we have more we often give less, and the snare of cheating the workers for the pay often comes from the wealthy people.

The more we have, the less we find ourselves giving and it must not be this way.  I am fighting this as I have found  this to be true being married to my husband now...of 14 yrs.  He desires riches and wealth and it is not my desire because of the cost that comes with it.  many who preach this prosperity doctrine have not clue what they are speaking about, plus it is not how God works at all.   lol

listen to James in this:

James 5:1  Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you.  Your wealth has rotted and the moths have eaten your clothes.  your gold and sliver are corroded.  Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire.  you have hoarded wealth in the "LAST DAYS".

This is pretty scary the proclamation made by James concerning the Last Days.   I don't want wealth, and I don't want to be rich because these who are will weep and wail when their misery comes upon them in these Last Days.

Girl, count it all JOY to be with little and know these things are for us.

LOL

Lol ok you have all challenged me here, but vickie I must disagree with you. There is nothing wrong with being rich, you said momey is the root of all evil, it is the love of money that is the root of all evil.

You talk about the prosperity doctrine, we can and should learn a lot from themm cor they have valuable truths, howwever they use them and put money as their primary focus, where God should be. Yet there is ample evidence in scripture that God is waiting to bless his people materially as well as spiritually.

I too am not focussed on the material side of life (much to the chagrin of most guys who are interested in me), yet God has had to sit me up, turn me around and shake me up to teach me these lessons, of how he wants to bless us in all areas of our lives.

Wow Sisters...such truths!  Thank you Lord for patiently teaching us.

You both make really good points.  And I really am not sitting on the fence on this one.  He has blessed (or cursed!  :D) me with being a Libra and not that I do horoscopes at all, but I do have that seeing both sides of issues.

You are both completely right!  And I think it kind of hinges on where our heart is.

The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil...including the trust of money, or security, or worth.  Jesus said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to find salvation.  I think that is because of how sin twists us so easily.  If one has plenty of money they do tend to trust it.  And how SAD is that??  Obviously we know it isn't worth trusting!!  Think of all the things money doesn't fix!!  But even sadder is that because the trust is there they don't really have a relationship with God!!

But as you brought up Rose...I do think our God loves us and wants to shower us with goodness and blessing!!  Do we really give Him as much credit as He deserves for who He is??  Or do we rather doubt and mistrust?

I think He blesses us as very much as He knows we are able to take! :D  A lot of people quote that God won't let us go through more than we can handle, thinking of "troubles" I honestly think that goes for blessings as well.

One really good point you both helped me to see is the blessings that go along with not having lots and lots.  When one is money poor there just are situations where we get to "see" God provide!!    And by knowing how that is He lets us share sometimes in seeing that wonder and awe in others faces if He lets us help them....

Thanks Laies!! ;D  PRAISE THE LORD!

Oops ......your right....I said it wrong, sorry Sharon....it is the "LOVE of MONEY"...

Yes, the Lord blesses according to his will.   Though let the rich be reminded they need to pay close attention to what is required of them with the money, for  the sins that can come from the wealth is pride and arrogance and selfishness which are sins and we are told they are by the Lord.

When James says the rich man has a low position (Jame 1:9) that in God's eye the poor man has higher position.   For me God speaks a strong message and warning to the wealthy, the rich.  Such as Lazarus and the Rich man, who did not share and give to the beggar. Who lost his right to life on this action.  These are truths told to us that if we do them we too will loose.

My personal prayer to God is to give me enough not to be in need but not to give me so much I stand to loose my eternal life through the love of money.   I personally do not want it.   Not everyone thinks this way, but it is mine.   lol

If you really want to see the flood gates of heaven open up to you for great blessing,  go and sell all you have and give to the poor.  This is a very true saying, and there are few who do it.  Sell all your jewelry and  if you have two coats give one away, do not have two of anything  in your possession  and then go and follow Christ.

I've seen people give tithes all their life to a church faithfully and never become wealthy as they followed the  law.  Then I have seen those who would give a tenth to the poor and the flood gates of heaven open up to them.... lol

Our Lord is a good Lord and there are certain things that please him more than others.

Sisters,

You have hit on a subject that 'H' just can not stand about me! MONEY!  ;D or my lack of concern for it! I  live with it and without and my understanding of money is, it is like the earth in motion, one side is in the dark while the other is in the light, but neither get to stop and stay there. When you get use to the day, night rolls around and when you get use to the night, day rolls around. Money comes and goes, when the Lord said sell everything...we own 'nothing' and the more we try to hold on to and keep for ourselves saying this is mine! The Lord has no reservations to snatch it from your hands and say you own 'nothing'. God owns it all, even the money that man has designed to keep points and show themselves approve by!

I use to say I own nothing, now I don't even say that, if nothing can be something I can own then I have fooled myself, God owns All...I now say I have been given 'nothing' which amounts to ALL things, the unseen 'nothing' is the beginning and foundation to all things seen...does that make sense?

I like how the Lord sent Peter fishing to get the taxes (tribute) Matt. 17

It's like the Lord told Peter to go relax! Go fishing, do something peacefully and something you like to do!  and the money was there  :)

'H' can get himself soooo worked up some times with worrying over where the money comes from and he gets all bent out of shape because I never take note of it! Like sleeping during a storm, 'H' will get in my face with 'DO YOU NOT REALIZE we need this and that...I say 'H', don't be so ridiculous the day is rolling around and you are missing out on the night!   God knows and never fails to provide what we truly need, Praise Him day and night, if my night is really dark then I can expect a really bright day coming around! At evening and dawn prepare for the short blindness of your eyes adjusting to the light...

Many blessings' sisters

I love your attitude...kinda like mine.

Spend what I need to today,  I prepare for tomorrow in case I should be there, and my husband freaks out.   lol    ::)

The rains come the storms blow by and I sleep really good, my husband is concerned, and wakes me up, then  I tell him,  it is God displaying his powers and if he is for us, who can be against us...go back to sleep.

I live by Matthew 6:25  Therefore I tell you do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothes?

If I can live today in the words of Christ to my neighbor and my family, and care for the family of God who is the body, then I don't worry about tomorrow because I believe verse 25.   My husband doesn't quite get it...lol

Love you sister....bunches and bunches...

I really wished our hubbies could just relax in the trust of the Lord, that's probably why the Lord sent us to them for a reminder!   :)
